Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
